Youth Assistant- Kids Adventure Center

Location: Rock Island, IL
Employee Type: Regular Part-time

It's a JUNGLE in here!!!  Come guide our little ones in drop off child care in our Kid's Adventure Center through fun and play!  Who doesn't love a job that is always an adventure?

Must enjoy working with children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Must be have a flexible schedule and able to works some Saturday mornings. A positive attitude and good communication skills a must!

Summary: The KAC Youth Assistant delivers excellent service to all members and their children, supervises and nurtures children, tends to their basic emotional and physical needs, remains alert and engaged, communicates with parents, and helps children explore individual interests, develop talents and independence, build self-esteem, and learn how to get along with others. They model caring, honesty, respect and responsibility to the children, parents, and other staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  •  Ensure all members and guests are welcomed and treated in a manner such that they enjoy the best possible experience at the Rock Island YMCA.
  •  Implement the Y’s Core Values and the 40 Developmental Assets into activities.
  •  Be physically and mentally present, alert, and engaged while on duty.
  •  Accept full responsibility and supervision for children while in their care, including ensuring their safety and wellbeing, nurturing and comforting children. This includes caring for infants including bottle feeding and diaper changing.
  •  Understand and implement basic risk management principles. Child and infant CPR certification must be kept current at all times.
  •  Incorporate child abuse prevention policies into all supervisory and care duties.
  •  Be aware of a child’s social, physical, and emotional abilities, and care for them at their level, adapting processes as needed.
  •  Maintain records including attendance, incident reports, and confidential member information.
  •  Communicate with members regarding their children, YMCA and department policies, and any other topics as necessary.
  •  Ensure proper usage of and care for facilities and equipment, including cleaning and sanitizing play areas, toys, and equipment, and maintaining a clean and neat facility.
  •  Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including ensuring proper usage of facilities and equipment 
  •  Manage all member and participant inquiries and complaints as effectively as possible. If follow up is needed, communicate situation to supervisor in a timely manner.  
  •  Use professional conduct when dealing with parents and co-workers.
  •  Communicate requests for supplies and equipment and necessary maintenance to supervisor(s).
  •  Attend regular staff meetings and trainings, and keep all required certifications current.

Qualification Requirements: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Must have experience working with children ages infant to 10 years old.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, curriculum, policy/procedure manuals, and financial documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from members and non-members of the YMCA. Ability to communicate effectively to children, parents, and other staff.

Mathematical Skills: Must have basic mathematical skills.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: CPR/AED Certification for infant, child & adult, Bloodborne Pathogen Training, Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training and any additional required trainings.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually high.
